Interesting... [Jan. 18th, 2008|04:52 pm]
[Current Mood | contemplative]

"We only laugh at those with whom we feel an affinity that we must repudiate, but the feeling of at-oneness has already happened… What mockery reveals, in other words, is the emotional terror of democracy. That what is always being ridiculed is our wish to be together, our secret affinity for each other."

Idiot claims Mass Effect allows players "to engage in the most realistic sex acts ever conceived."

I love it when people who have clearly done no research at all (into anything) try to incite uproar based entirely on their own false assumptions.

Sleeping (Or Not) [Dec. 7th, 2007|06:54 am]
[Current Mood | awake]
[Current Music |Eyerer & Chopstick -- Haunting (Original Mix)]

Sometimes, I worry about my sleeping habits.  It's been 22 hours since I've slept, and I'm not tired at all, for no reason I can tell.  Just happens to me sometimes.  I've got a final exam in an hour, and normally I think I would be worried going into that with no sleep, but it seems like I'm less tired now than I was when I woke up yesterday morning.

Walking in the Fog [Nov. 6th, 2007|08:32 pm]
[Current Mood | contemplative]
[Current Music |Milky -- Be My World]

It was really foggy today, so I decided to walk home.  I know, wonderful reasoning.  But I really enjoy walking in the fog at night; seeing the shapes formed by the distant lights, haloed by the mist.  There's something about those fantastic shapes, imagining and dreaming about what they might be beneath the covers of the fog, then watching them coalesce into reality.  I had a thought that maybe walking on a foggy night is like moving forward in time: you dream about the future, indistinct and wonderful, and watch as they slowly become the mundanity of the future, never quite what you'd dreamed but still interesting in its own right.

Not in cruelty,
Not in wrath,
The Reaper came today;
An Angel visited
        this gray path,
And took the cube away.

Ugh, Hot Water [Oct. 8th, 2007|10:54 pm]
[Current Mood | annoyed]
[Current Music |Dogs Die In Hot Cars -- I Love You 'Cause I Have To]

So, I was going to write this neat post about all this thinking I've been doing about the ramifications of a dataflow economy, but then while I was typing it, our hot water heater exploded again. Apparently, our landlord didn't do a good enough job fixing it last time, so I'm going to have to wake up extra early tomorrow and call them to come fix it. Again. Meanwhile, cold showers for all, and more nasty, soggy carpet to clean up. Again. Well, at least it's not a home we own, I guess.

I Does Can Find a Cool Thing [Sep. 22nd, 2007|01:44 pm]

[Current Music |Complete Silence in an Empty Lab]

So, somebody linked me to something pretty cool today, a website called WOWIO. It's basically a service that allows you to download eBooks, legally, for free. Unfortunately, it's currently only available to US residents, and their selection of books is still pretty small, and you can only get three books per day, but it still seems pretty cool. Also, they have some pretty strict requirements for registration, presumably to stop people from getting around the 3 books/day limit. Still, it seems like it could be really neat sometime it the future. I approve of easy to access free online content, fueled by the marketing theory that greater exposure leads to better sales of print books.

"Because memory and sensations are so uncertain, so biased, we always rely on a certain reality--call it an alternate reality--to prove the reality of events. To what extent facts we recognize as such really are as they seem, and to what extent these are facts merely because we label them such, is an impossible distinction to draw. Therefore, in order to pin down reality as reality, we need another reality to relativize the first. Yet that other reality requires a third reality to serve as its grounding. An endless chain is created within our conciousness, and it is the very maintenance of this chain that produces the sensation that we are actually here, that we ourselves exist. But something can happen to sever that chain, and we are at a loss. What is real? Is reality on this side of the break in the chain? Or over there, on the other side?"

Sometimes living with nerds is awesome. [Jun. 14th, 2007|12:50 pm]

[Current Music |Sound Iemitsu -- Sleeping is typing keyboard]

We had a large, nasty weed problem in a garden in our backyard. Large, nasty. I'm talking huge weeds as tall as me. I was a bit annoyed, because I was figuring that some day I'd have to go buy a machete to take care of them. Today, however, I walked outside to find my roommate tearing down large swaths of them... With a katana. And thus, my day was made.

Interesting Mornings... [Apr. 28th, 2007|11:30 am]

[Current Mood | awake]
[Current Music |Click click click go the hard drives in the Laptop Office]

So Zac and I entered a 24 hour photography challenge. The subject was revealed to be "growth" at 2 o'clock yesterday afternoon, and the photo is due in today at 2 o'clock. Zac and I got up early this morning and headed to Spencer's Butte to shoot our idea -- we were trying to stay away from the cliche ideas, plants, babies, buildings and so on. We chose a theme of "moving on," or "personal growth," going a bit more metaphorical, hopefully, than the average entry. We photographed Kai standing on the cliff's edge, throwing a textbook and all the pages that were torn out of it into the wind. This is, of course, cliche in its own way, but really, what isn't? Zac was behind the lense, and I got to assume my semi-standard position of "lighting monkey," holding the flasher out over the edge to get the kind of flash we wanted. The downside, however, was the hilarious fun of having to run down after each shot, pick up all the paper, and haul it back up top.

Oh well, I guess it's more interesting than my normal Saturday morning routine -- you know, sleeping.
